Professional Profile

Doug Post is a general practitioner and business trial lawyer with more than 40 years’ experience handling a variety of legal matters.  Over the course of his career, he has primarily handled litigation matters but increasingly serves as general counsel and legal advisor to his clients.  In addition to providing general legal advice and counsel, his primary areas of practice in the recent past have been in litigation of professional errors and omissions and legal malpractice, insurance coverage (directors & officers liability, employment practices liability, commercial general liability, and professional errors & omissions) and bad faith, contract, real property, sales and competitive business practices, admiralty and maritime, and construction claims.

Doug graduated cum laude from Andover, then obtained his A.B. in Economics from Stanford University in 1975 and J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1978.  He earned an LL.M. from Cambridge University in 1979.  His academic honors include election to Phi Beta Kappa following his junior year at Stanford (top 2%) and receipt of a Coffman Foundation scholarship for his post-graduate study at Cambridge.

Before establishing his own practice, Doug was a partner and trial lawyer in one of the 100 largest law firms in the country.  He has conducted jury and bench trials of cases involving claims for breach of contract and breach of warranty, insurance bad faith, Uniform Commercial Code sales and unfair competition, D&O liability for securities fraud, malicious prosecution, marine collision and pilot liability, and administration of an offshore commercial self-insurance program.  In addition to trials and arbitrations, Doug has represented insurance companies in a variety of cases involving securities, real estate, accident and property damage claims; law firms in malpractice claims, a sporting goods manufacturer in insurance, sales and tort claims; a major oil company in dealer-franchise and real property litigation; an electronics retailer and general contractors in construction claims; shipping companies in lease, cargo and property damage claims; as well as small businesses and individuals in a variety of fields.

Doug has served as outside general counsel to Jacobsen Pilot Service, Inc., the Long Beach harbor pilots, and as a director and principal legal advisor to the Board of Directors of the Marine Exchange of Southern California, Inc., for more than 30 years.  He is also the principal legal advisor to a food processing and distribution company and a small bio-tech, pharmaceutical company.  Doug has also served as local counsel for out-of-state law firms on matters pending in California courts.

Doug offers clients the experience and training from his years in big corporate law firms combined with sensitivity to his clients’ concern about the often excessive cost of litigation and legal services.  He strives to always provide high-quality and cost-efficient legal services while charging a significantly lower rate than bigger corporate firms charge for attorneys with similar credentials and experience.
